Chariton County Soil and Water Conservation District
Assistance Available
Cost-Share Assistance Program
The cost-share program provides financial incentives to help farmers and landowners install erosion control practices on their farms. The program has helped conserve and ensure the continued productivity of soil and water resources in Chartion County. Funds for the program come from the one-tenth-of-one-percent parks, soils and water sales tax approved by voters.
Chariton County receives approximately $370,000 in regular funds and $130,000 for the AgNPS fund. A variety of practices are eligible to treat highly erodible cropland or to convert it to pasture or hayland, with around 90 practices completed each year in our county. Cost-share is provided for up to 75 percent of all necessary costs incurred by the landowner. Sign-up for assistance is during the month of January each year. The fields will then be evaluated and ranked accordingly.
Loan Interest Share Program
Loan interest share is an interest refund incentive that returns a portion of the interest to the participant on a conventional loan obtained for eligible practices. The funds are loaned by the farmer's regular lender with a minimum principal amount of $2,500 and a maximum of $25,000. Up to ten years is allowed for repayment except for equipment loans, in which case the maximum repayment period allowed is five years.
The program promotes the use of management practices that will help prevent erosion. These practices provide both direct and indirect erosion control.
