Cost-Share Practice Descriptions

 DSL 1 - Permanent Vegetative Cover Establishment
Purpose: To establish vegetative cover on farmland which has an existing erosion problem.
Authorized Cost Share: Lime and fertilizer, eligible seed, planting and seed bed preparation.

DSL 11 - Permanent Vegetative Cover on Critical Areas
Purpose: To stop erosion on critical areas (such as gullies, banks, roadsides, field borders, and similar problem areas).
Authorized Cost Share: For measures needed to stabilize a source of sediment, such as grading, shaping, and filling, establishment (including lime and fertilizer) of grasses (including filter strips), mulching, tree or shrub planting and fencing to exclude livestock from new plantings.

DFR 5 - Woodland Protection Through Livestock Exclusion
Purpose: To prevent erosion problems by excluding livestock from steep timbered areas and along streams.
Authorized Cost-Share: a) Plantings to correct immediate erosion problems and the necessary seed or seedlings. b) Field fencing to exclude livestock from woodland or streams that lie within an existing functional interior or property line fence.

DSP2 - Permanent Vegetative Cover Enhancement
Purpose: To improve pasture conditions where vegetative cover is in poor or very poor condition, with less than 30 percent introduced legumes, or to fescue pastureland in better than poor condition with less than 30 percent introduced legumes and where fescue endophyte fungus infestation levels are greater than 30 percent, and less than 70 percent.
Authorized Cost-Share: a) For legume seed, and for lime and fertilizer to soil test. b) for cost of using a no-till drill.

DSP3 - Planned Grazing System
Purpose:  To demonstrate benefits of rotational grazing through the use of a planned grazing system. *Grazing system manager must attend a grazing school.
Authorized Cost Share: a) For water distribution systems including pipelines, waters ram pumps, hydrants and tanks. b) For interior fencing to divide pastures, including barb or electric fence, gates and charger. c) For spring development for livestock water. d) For warm season grass establishment where needed as part of the grazing system. e) For pond construction where soils are suitable and required by the grazing system. Pond must be fenced to exclude livestock.

DFR 4 - Forest Plantation
Purpose: To protect the soil and to encourage the conversion of marginal soils to less intensive use, and to reduce soil erosion from agricultural sources.
Authorized Cost-Share: a) Seed or seedlings, seedbed preparation b) Field fencing to exclude livestock from woodland. c) Planting of orchard, ornamental, trees or Christmas tree production ext.
